UNIX Basics

I use UNIX (solaris) quite a lot at work. I thought I would post a few simple commands that novice users can pick up and use.

ls -l:
Will list all of the items in a directory.

mk dir:
Will create a directory

grep whatyouarelookingfor * :
Will search all of the files in the directory you are in for the string "whatyouarelookingfor".

cd home:
Will bring you back to your home directory.

man cd: The man command will return a description of the function you specify i.e. cd

touch newfilename.txt: Will create a new file called newfilename.txt

chmod: Can be used to assign permissions to a file e.g chmod 666 myfile will allow read/write for everyone on myfile. Useful if you have just created a new file.

cp /to/alpha.txt /from/beta.txt: Used to copy information from one file to another.

rm file.txt: Will delete file.txt

ps: Will list the number of processes running on your box.

Hope this helps..

Visit to the Physiotherapist

Its a strange thing going to the physio. Its like going to the doctor without the formality. Anyway, after having some trouble with my knees and pains in my legs recently I went to see what the physio had to say. I laid on my back as he twisted and turned my legs, rolled my knees and listened for cracks and abnormalities. Similar to watching a plumber trying to find an airlock in a heating system. So after 10 minutes of this he finally gave me his diagnosis. On my left knee a loose anterior cruciate ligament and on the right some minor wear and tear. He also threw in tight hamstrings and calf muscles on both legs. I must admit I thought I was invincible. I would go without injury. But as the old adage goes you need to stretch after exercise and take a break once in a while. I can't say I've done either of those over the past year. The physio recommended I go on a program of massages and rehabilitation exercises over the next couple of months. Hopefully I'll be back to my old form by mid summer ;-)

Opinions on the Irish Property Market

Contrary to the heady days, post 2002 to 2006, the slump in the Irish property market is something that is less talked about online these days. Its a bit like somebody who's sprained their ankle. It becomes annoying when they complain about it all the time. As an Irishman I'm proud of what the Irish economy has achieved over the past 20 years. It has brought prosperity and wealth to an island that has been dealt a series of bad hands over the years. What remains to be seen though is how much of this will be retained as the housing market slumps, the US economy contracts and commodities prices continue to rises.
House prices were previously being pushed down largely because they were exceeding prices the market was willing to pay. The sudden introduction of new factors such as increasing mortgage prices, rising eurozone inflation and unemployment will put further pressure on prices and will increase the probability of a crash occurring. Even if prices do come down considerably demand will be impacted as the pool of people who normally look to buy will have been eroded due to unemployment and will have less purchasing power due to higher mortgage costs...
